Ledger IIThe Source
Fifty thousand years ago a man went underground and asked a dead god for a weapon. He failed to understand the bargain he had struck, and was forever changed by it.
The herders had no reason to distrust him. He had walked out of the ice alone, which should have killed him, and he had been decent about it. They kept mammoth, they took him in for a winter, and by the end of it he was not a stranger.
So they told him the truth about the hill their gathering-ground sat on. There was a way down into it. There was something under it older than anyone’s grandfather. They left it alone, they had good reasons, and they gave him all of them.
He asked to be shown. They showed him.
He went down at dusk on the night of the great gathering, when every family had come in off the herds and there were more people on that hill than in a generation. Below he sat through days and nights, his stomach protesting the water he occasionally sipped between prayers, in front of something that had once been a god to somebody. Then he asked it for a weapon. He was specific. He wanted something he could use on the thing that had come out of the dark when he was twelve and taken everyone he had. He wanted vengeance.
The thrumming power that kept him here had silenced. He could no longer feel its presence. He reached for a sip of water and collapsed.
He woke amidst a warm yurt in the dawning light. He was beyond parched and began to seek something to slake his thirst. The mammoth milk was thick, but it helped. It was then that he saw the bodies.
He walked the camp a long time. He counted them, because counting was the only thing left that resembled respect, and he had not finished when he heard it.
In the fourth or fifth hide he opened, something was crying.
A boy. Two years old, perhaps three. Pale-haired, filthy, furious, alive, and the only thing on that hill that was.
He carried him out into the snow and did not put him down for a day and a night. He has never said what he was doing. The likeliest answer is arithmetic.
Then he named him.
Not a name from the tribe, because nobody was left to say it correctly. Not his own. He took a sound out of no language that has ever existed and gave it a meaning, and the meaning was vengeful wrath.
He did not mean it as a hope for the boy. He meant it as a debt, and he was the one who owed it.
Then he raised him.
He owed him, and the Gods owed him a weapon.
Ezikai Odet
The man who closed the door.
- What he is
- Human, once. He stopped aging at thirty. He did not do it on purpose and it frightened him for years.
- How long
- About fifty thousand years. From a lost time that he allowed the world to forget, older than every god you have heard of.
- What he did about it
- He closed the world. The empty sky over your house is his work, and it is still holding.
- What it cost
- More lives than any other figure in human history. He knows the number.
- What he is not
- Cruel. That is what everyone gets wrong, and it is what should worry you. He is not cruel. He is certain.
- If you meet him
- He will be kind to you, and he will mean it, and it will not change one thing he has already decided.
A collector pays your players well to authenticate a single carved word from a site far too old to have carving in it. Every scholar says the same thing: it is not a word and never was. He pays in full without surprise and asks whether they want more work. He already knows what it means. He is deciding whether they are useful.
