Ledger VThe Void
Magic is not a talent. It is a door, and something lives on the other side of it.

Provenance withheld. Older than the Order. The Ledger holds the stone itself.
Stand where the ground is dry.
Empty the hand you mean to use.
Reach. Do not reach far.
Take hold of what is nearest.
Bring it back into the air of this place, and let go.
[ four lines lost ]
Do not speak while the hand is inside.
Do not reach twice between one dark and the next.
Do not take hold of a thing that is already moving.
The stone gives no reason for the last three.
Everyone has the wrong idea about magic, and the wrong idea is that it is a talent.
It is not. It is a door, and the door has always been in the same place, and everyone who has ever worked a real wonder did the identical thing the tablet describes: reached through, took hold of a piece of somewhere else, and brought it back. That is the whole mechanism. A woman calling rain and a man raising a wall of fire are not doing two different things. The difference is not the result. The difference is where the hand went.
We have a name for the somewhere else. We call it the Void, and the name is the least interesting thing about it.
It is not empty. That is the sentence the Order would take out of this file if it could, and it is the reason the file exists. The place a magician reaches into is not a blank drawer that magic is kept in. It is a place. It has distances. Things travel through it, the way a road is travelled. Things live in it, the way a country is lived in. Some of them are very old and very large and very dangerous.
Every time anyone anywhere has ever reached in, they have put a hand into an inhabited dark, taken something out of it, and then gone about their day.
Ask the people who have done it what it looks like and they cannot tell you, because it looks different to each observer. They agree on other things instead. That it has a temperature. That the hand comes back knowing how deep it went, the way a foot knows the bottom step. That what they took hold of was not the only thing within reach of them.
The scholars who understood this best were never the ones who could reach the furthest. They were the ones who started asking what the reaching looks like from the other side. Something happens over there every time it happens here. A hand arrives out of nothing. It is attached to something. It takes.
It is also a road, and that is the part this Archive keeps walking back into. The fleet the Moon broke did not cross ordinary distance to get here. Nothing does. Through is shorter than around, and it is shorter for everything that has ever wanted to arrive.
Which brings us back to the stone, and to the three instructions at the end of it.
The first can be argued as caution. A voice carries, and a careful practitioner works quietly. The second can be argued as exhaustion, and most translators have.
The third cannot be argued at all. Do not take hold of a thing that is already moving. That is not advice about magic. Magic does not care whether the piece you take is in motion. That is advice about the difference between an object and an animal, written by someone who had learned it, and who thought it important enough to cut into stone for people not yet born. The Ledger keeps the tablet in a locked case, and keeps translating it, and has never once published it. This file is the first time any of it has left the building.
Your players are hired to recover a stone slab taken from a private collection, and the theft makes no sense: the thief walked past everything valuable to get to it.
They find him inside a week. He is not hiding. He has already done what the stone describes, he did it correctly, and he is unharmed and perfectly calm.
He has one question for them, and he asks it before they can ask anything of him. He wants to know whether they heard anything on the way in.
