Nothing in this document is dated. The hand does not change.
The world you live in was crafted from a much darker first age that the eons have kept safely hidden from you. Nobody told you, because all who could remember the old world are no longer, long dead or forever changed, and that cataclysm is why you are here today.
Start with what you already know from this Archive. The door was always there. Anyone could reach through it, and on the other side is a place that is not empty, and the things in it travel the way anyone travels a road. Some of them came here. They came for a long time, and they came for us specifically, and what they found when they arrived was a species that had never once been able to stop them.
That is the world that ended. Not in a war. In a working.
One man decided the door should be shut, and then he shut it.
Understand what that sentence is actually describing, because the scale of it is the only part most people cannot hold in their heads. He was not a god. The Order is very firm on this and so is every document we hold: he was a man, with a man’s limits, who happened to have one advantage nothing else alive has ever had. He had time. Not a lifetime. Not a dynasty. Time in the quantity that carves canyons, and the patience to spend it on a single problem.
The working notes in this file are the closest thing we have to watching him do it. They are a list of failures. A boundary that lasted a season. One that lasted eleven years. One that lasted four hundred and which he found beautiful, and which he wrote off with the same word he used for the others, because it was insufficient and being beautiful is not the same as being finished.
The hand does not change. Read that again, and then look at the durations. The man who wrote the line about the season is the man who wrote the line about the four hundred years, and there is no tremor between them, and there is no note anywhere in the recovered sheets that reads like grief or triumph or fatigue. Whatever it cost him to keep going is not written down. Something that big usually is.We do not print what he spent. That is not squeamishness, and the Ledger holds the figures. It is that the cost is a different file, and if you read it next to this one you will stop being able to see this one clearly.
Here is what the working did. Earth stopped being somewhere you could simply arrive.
That is the whole of it, and it changed everything downstream. The things that wanted in were suddenly obliged to cross real distance, in real ships, taking real years, and arriving where they could be seen coming. Everything the Order has ever fought here, it fought because somebody had to take the long way. A fleet broke on the Moon because of this sealing. Waves crashed against the defences the way the tide crashes on the shore, and to no avail. They could not get back in.
And the other half of it is happening to you, right now, and you have never noticed. The door is still there. It has not moved. You simply cannot get it open, and neither can anyone you have ever met. The last person who could do it perished at great cost, likely because of that very ability, and never knew they would be one of the last.
It worked. That is the part to sit with. This is not a story about a noble failure. The mundane world is not what was always true, it is what was achieved, at a price recorded elsewhere, by someone who filed the result without comment. The Ledger’s position, held for as long as the Ledger has existed, is that the working is sound and the matter is closed.
The Ledger is also the arm that keeps the notes, and the notes end with three words rather than a conclusion, and anyone who has read them in full knows why that sentence has always sounded like a man reassuring himself.
The boundary holds.Your players are hired to find out what happened to a local holy man, whatever your setting keeps: a shaman, a medium, a priest. He lay down to send his mind out, the way he had done a hundred times, and he has not woken since. His body breathes. Nothing else about him works, and his people are out of patience with waiting.
Getting him back means going out the way he went out. That puts the party in it themselves, with the working between them and the room they left, and it is the only way any of them will ever see the thing this file is about from the inside.
Then give them the pull. Mention it again every few minutes at the table, in the same flat way each time: something has a light grip on them, it has had it since they arrived, and it is patient. It does not tighten. It is simply always there, and it is always in one direction.
Make it a mild save against whatever your system calls the mind. Wits, wisdom, resolve, sanity, the one you already have. Raise the number as the session goes on if you want the peril to climb, and let the players notice you raising it.
And weight it by what the character is. The working was built to stop things far stronger than any person, so the strongest character at the table feels it hardest and the least impressive one may barely notice it at all. That is not a flaw in it. That is the whole design, and it is the reason the party can be here doing this instead of being held here.
A character who breaks goes flat. Lobotomised, biddable, present but not really there. After a second failure they stop arguing about any of it and only want to lie down and sleep, and they will say so reasonably, and they will mean it.
The others can bring them back. A hand on the shoulder and a hard word will do it, whatever your system calls charisma or command, and so will hurting them a little, handled as an astral attack because that is what everyone in the room currently is.
They can find him. The longer they take about it, the more they will understand why nobody sensible does this twice, and exactly what the man they came for did wrong.
