What This Is
Nothing has ever happened to you. That is not an accident, and this is the archive of how it was arranged.
Nothing has ever happened to you.
That is not an insult. It is the point. You have lived your entire life on a world where the sky is empty, the dark is only dark, and the strangest thing that will ever happen to you is a light over a field that you cannot explain and will have stopped thinking about by Thursday.
It was not always like this.
There was a time when the world was open. Things came here as easily as you walk into a room, and they did not come to visit. They came because we were useful. Whatever you imagine that means, the truth of it is worse and better documented than you would like.
Then somebody closed the door.
Not an army. Not a god. One man, who decided this could not go on, and who then spent a length of time on the problem that no human being should have been able to spend. He worked at it the way water works at stone. And it took everything: the world’s wonders, the world’s monsters, and an unspeakable number of people who never knew what they had been spent on.
He succeeded. That is the part worth sitting with. You are living in the proof. The empty sky over your house is not how the universe is. It is a thing that was built, at ruinous cost, and it is still holding.
Mostly.
This archive is what got left behind. Transcripts nobody was supposed to keep. Files on people who should not still be alive. Places that are on no map because the map was corrected. Some of it was recovered honestly and some of it was taken, and where a page is missing it is missing because somebody decided you should not have it.
Here is what to expect, so you are not reading in the dark:
Every entry stands on its own. One person, one place, or one thing that should not have been written down. You never need to have read the last one, and there is no wrong end to start from. We tell you what happened. Sometimes the explaining is thin, because the people who wrote these documents were not trying to be understood by you. Understanding is not what they sought. Names will go past you before you know them. That is deliberate. Someone will be mentioned with no introduction, and later you will find out who they were and what they did. Let them go past. They come back. And every entry ends with something you can use, because a story you cannot do anything with is just a story.Nothing has ever happened to you.
Somebody made very sure of it, and this is the record of what that cost.
Every entry closes with one hook you can drop into a game tonight, tagged for the era it suits. Take the piece and throw the rest away if you like: none of this is a campaign you have to buy into, and the history is a spine you can ignore. What it gives you is a world where the mundane is the suspicious part.
